The Wonderful World of Viv

Here is a multiple choice quiz: Viv Trafalgar is:

a) A talented clothing designer
b) A creator of marvelous builds
c) A shrewd scripter
d) A community encourager and supporter
e) A writer and aetheric engineer (webmaster in mundane terms)
f) An intelligent woman of Proper Salon Society
g) A silly, funny friend
h) All of the above

The correct answer is, of course, H. Viv is indeed a talented clothing designer... but what good is clothing without a community to dress up for? The Steampunk and Victorian communities of Second Life have greatly benefited from Viv's creativity and generosity, in so many ways! I am lucky enough to be one of those she's taken under her wing. Let me count the ways. I, along with Ahnyanka Delphin were privileged to be invited to speak on the topic of Burlesque at one of the monthly Aether Salons organized by Viv and and fellow Salonista Serafina Puchkina. Viv has also been a patient teacher as I learn the art of building, encouraging me with lessons, laughter and a great deal of patience. We share a Hello Kitty bond that cannot be explained. Viv has a knack for committing random acts of hilarity in my IM window just when I am at my most frustrated. She's recently joined the staff of the Primgraph magazine, which makes us co-workers! She is not one to toot her own horn enough, and so I've stolen her horn and want to give a few trumpet blasts on it.

Let's start with a view of the Aether Salon, which Viv has built kittycorner from my Cafe. I love the building, and often sit on my patio and gaze at it, thinking of the fun Salons that have taken place there. Why does Viv put up with all of us and our wacky Salon antics? "What I love most about Salon is what happens when people present at one - the knowledge and creativity they share and the respect and care with which the audience (and the broader audience reading it on the website) receives it. I love the wit, the fact that everyone comes together and realizes together how utterly awesome we all are."

And of course, there are the clothes! I prodded Viv to tell me what her own favorites are. "I like the hats a lot, and the Velut Cantare. A lot of people like the Velut Hiber. I like the Avast items - which are all named for 19th century female pirate captains - Bonny Ann , Mary Reade , Charlotte deBerry, Lady Ching. I'm working on some new pieces right now that I'm very excited about, and I take commissions for special items - if the customer gives permission, a version is released after a particular event to the general public."

Viv plays well with others, too. "Often in collaboration with Jasper Kiergarten, I make uniforms - New Stabbage, the Ladies' Fire Brigade, and now the Cavalry (the hats for which have drop-down goggles)." She also works with Jasper on building projects.

She is very proud of her contributions to the astounding sim of Armada Breakaway. Her work on Armada Undersea is, in all senses of the word, immersive.

And then there's the Heliodrome, with interactive fun for everyone! Grapple with the docking lines, or send a telegraph to let your loved ones know you've arrived safely in Babbage.

Viv creates scripted objects such as followers and telegraphs. She scripts notecard-driven items, like books that give out random quotes (that the owner can change) when you touch them. She makes teleports. She takes commissions for logos and vendor card sets. Along with Jasper, she works on building commissions under the name Bespoke Architectural Services. She does not sleep, nor rest for more than ten seconds at a time. How does she do all this, while nuturing her friendships and adding vibrancy to her busy community? I have no clue.

Her generousity is apparent to all who know her. Viv says, "I like the facts that my shops give me a chance to put forward the work of others - Elleon's awesome shoes; Jasper's colt on the mens' dusters, Bela's landship. I like having links to other places in SL in my shop for people to take and enjoy."

I have to mention the hats apart from the rest of Viv's clothing, as they are just too nifty. Viv's whimsical line of mini-clocktopper hats are impossible to resist. Available in George Eliot, Jolly Roger, Darwinian and Lovelace designs, these charmers each feature a gleaming brass clock at the headband. A touch causes the casing to swing open, revealing the clock face and hidden portraits (or a treasure map!) Viv offered the Lovelace clocktopper for just 1L during the grand opening event at her Port Babbage location. Since it makes people happy, she's never raised the price!

If you are still reading, I know you're now a fan of Viv's, just like I am. Let's all throw our mini-clocktoppers in the air, and give a 'huzzah', to Miss Trafalgar!
